Extraction fan, air flow holes , cooling tower (2 fans stuck together) extra p/sulpply for lights and fans, USB x2 charger + power society .. now the swr meter is playing up.. great... this really is the ducks nuts in radios I just love it in case I did not mention that :eyebrows: very very happy with it, come on new antenna.... cheers to all.... Please let me know what you think ? Ideas welcome... :-) 351.....

Looks nice, job well done my friend. Hope to talk to you soon. Heard a couple of people from down your way here the past couple days, couldn't get back, too much traffic. Anyway, setup looks very nice, how's the radio working out for you?

Wile I wait for antenna matcher to come pulled the system apart for a few important bits - bigger air holes , perspex in top shelf to let out light and some of the switches replaced with better quality one's, I have to set up two power sources to one radio so some new switches for that to... so have to recover main panel too... Hear is the messy inside ! PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, ITS JUST A HOME JOB !

It is a little better set up now.. slightly tidy (ish)
No one will ever see this ( inside) I said to myself ! Hu so much for that... cheers guys.. 351 Tassie...

Crude drawing but a thought for two different power sources , to shut one down totally before using the other.. Will the diodes be needed to stop lights from doing there own thing ? Light from switch will be wired to switch next to it ? Is that making any since ? Don't want power making lights half on when should be off or powering up meter in power supply.. ? What problems can you see ?

solarradio351
02-20-2014, 12:02 AM
The grant is sitting in the box awaiting the antenna matcher / new switches and recover fascia..
14041404
What a waste...

solarradio351
02-20-2014, 05:33 AM
Hi again to all.. I have decided to use the switches in pics for my set up .. latching switches for fans only .3 to 0.4 amp computer type fans.. The rockers are red for power switching and carbon fiber look for all lights and bits.. That's the plan ...
1405
1406 1407

The round ones replace the black ones with the red and green lights and the rockers are all up higher so no light in my face from LEDs...
Cheers and thanks for the interest that you have had in this.. 73s ... 351....

solarradio351
02-20-2014, 07:30 PM
I have a fluffy dog ? Could change his name to ignore ? Its all coming along well have fitted the wiring for the switches and put big diodes in so no risk of power going any way it wants.. I think I've nutted out how to make it work so I'm giving it a go ! No risk to grant will use multi meter before that gos in .. should look neet with a bit of chrome on the new switches... no mates hear are into radios or elect gizzmos so its nice to have some interest in my crazy ideas and builds, suppose I'm just an old nerd ! But a happy one ... :-) ... cheers guys.... 351..

Not a nerd, a very smart man!! Take your time and get it done right. Looking good and I'm sure it will work well when complete. Heard a bit of Aussie coming into my receive the other night. And yesterday as well. But it's so hard to get back to any of them as everyone wants to talk to someone down under.

solarradio351
02-28-2014, 03:30 AM
More delays. No swr meter yet so holding off on start up till swr meter / antenna matcher and the new antenna get hear, so I'm going to use the time to find some dress rings (flash washers) for around round switches.. They need a bit of movement to line up straight, so will weld up my poles and WAIT some more.. and more life sux with no cb....

solarradio351
02-28-2014, 04:58 PM
Off on the tractor I go ! Heading next door to cut there grass ( slashing) with my tractor + slasher, Trying to make some cash for my new base amp... so hard to buy hear (amps) unless you use etray so may have to get the 505v, quality would be nice but getting it hear is the problem... better get to it...73s... 351...

OUT OF TOTAL BOREDOM I IN STALLED A LITTLE SYSTEM TO SWAP SPEAKERS WITHOUT PULLING THE RIG EACH TIME, OLD JACK PLUG IN BACK UP TO ON OFF ON SWITCH JOINED ALL THE NEGATIVE'S UP AND RAN POSITIVE THROUGH SWITCH .. UP I GET BEARCAT SPEAKER DOWN IT GOES TO SMALL AMP THEN ON TO BIGGER SPEAKER IN BOX UNDER WORK BENCH...
1529
Now I will hear you junkies with some base and not so much scratchy noise from static ! Was Just an idea now its alive and works a treat... :-).. :-).... 351

solarradio351

Keep in mind ( PLEASE ) This hole set up apart from the radio's, and main electronic's has been built out of scrap and recycled gear.. I hate to throw out useful stuff, even wire... perspex gets used to the last little bit..
1531

Old amp worked well just out of its box in a draw for years, not that I want it loud just the cb alone can't drive a good speaker that is not tinny... 351... :-)

Few times I've got it near finished and found a problem that can only be fixed by total removal of fascia that's disconnect all switches 7 bottom 11 top one's a pain in the brain ! But it will all be worth it SOON ! once up and running I will go through its list of functions its quite long... :-) 351 :-)

The new 24v converter is on its way.. .. last little one was just that LITTLE, it ended up fryed ! So now I've got x2, 30amp 13.8v from 24v converters using them parallel so 60amps constant at 13.8v should be a lot better than the small 12v unit... the power supply is great but I'm getting 2 of the 80amp megga watt ones to upgrade it to... With my switching set up you can turn power supply off and 24v converters on with no pulling of plugs or sliding unit out, just flick a switch.. part of why I've used missile switches so its harder to make a mistake or bump switches into on possie .. its been fun to wire up ! Lol.... 351 :-)... have antenna mast done by this arvo... :-)

Came to a grinding Holt for a while after a shocking experience 30k out to sea as my buddy dropped to the deck dead from a massive heart attack. A truly horrid helpless day... thought I should explain a bit as to why all seems to have stopped, now as soon as my girl is a bit more recovered and stable I will be back to work and the antenna will go up... just trying to help the rest of my family and friends through it ..

I have one of those and have been told by a person who knows me said it sounded "Just like I was standing right next to him." SSB/FM or AM quality audio begins at the microphone, and carries through the radio. A great mike on a POS radio is a lost cause, but it will be better than a stock mic. Studio Quality sound is what you get with the D-104.

If want to go old school for sideband, I would strongly recommend the Shure 526T with red volume knob an excellent AM and SSB mic. Also the Astatic 575M6 or the Astatic Echomax 2000 for a base. The Astatic Eagles tend to have alot of mid's and high's and miss the low end you like to have on SSB. They are great AM mic's though,

PS - Can't beat those D-104 Silver Eagles for AM on pretty much any CB or Export radio. Just have to know how to adjust the mic gain, usually not all the way up, and also need to get the proper adjustment on volume on bottom of D-104 Base Mic or it will overmodulate and sound like shit. Once get it set up right for the radio they are awesome on AM can pick-up a pin needle dropping if crank up volume on mic and can hear everything in house, that was why have to adjust properly and sound awesome. Can't beat for AM, one of the best mic's ever made, the whole line of them from Silver Eagle to Night Eagle, to Gold Eagle and many other different variations. Also make sure the MC-320 cartridge was taken out of mic and a junk one put in.

Good Mic for Ham radio's, sometimes don't match that good with CB or 11/12 meter radio's. Only better is the MC-100 for the kenwood would recommend over the 90 series.

Not sure if Kenwood will be a good match for the New President Grant 2? It is hit and miss have to try out and see if good match. Same would go for the Studio Audio Gear have to try out and can get very expensive very quickly with custom XLR cables and different types of Condenser Mic's. I am experimenting myself with Studio Hookup. The Studio Gear usually works much better with the Ham Radio's, due the Ham radio's have much better bandwidth and can really appreciate the Studio Mic, where as CB's or Export Radio's are limited with Bandwidths, unless you had your radio also modified to receive and transmit with wider bandwidths.

Do you mean an Astatic 575m6, Handheld, D-104 new in box for $90 ?? Because a new D-104 is on;y at most $34.95 and sometimes $ 29.99 for the Hand version. I assume amplified with 9 volt battery, that is a nice mic and new with box definitely worth $90. In my opinion they all sounded the same when it came to the Base D-104 Eagles, all use the MC-320 mic Cartridge, whether a night eagle, golden eagle, silver eagle, or tug8 D-104. All use the same cartridge and had same great audio just cosmetic difference except one of the Night Eagle versions had that roger beep and a 20 db gain on bottom in addition to volume switch. Just keep away from the un-amplified ones think they need some sort of studio pre-amp to boost them up. Bought a couple and sounded terrible by themselves hooked to radio.

Hard to get a pic because of the back lighting on gauge's
Has got forward power reflected power peek, average, swr alarm , over powering the unit alarm, amp power cut off protection,
And more.. gotta learn how to use it now.. bit of a difference with this one with all the power readings and swr changed with it in line, once all in line items are there should I re tune antenna to suit ? Been told to just leave as is but why have gauges if reading is wrong ?

Anyway, if you have a way to turn the dead key power up or down on your radio, try that, idk what it is set at now, but i would think 2 watts would do. PM me if needed mate, I will try to help best I can.

Does it make noise on AM or SSB? If SSB, if SBB like 222DBFL said raise dead-key may help or may have to raise the ALC for SSB. I had this issue and had to mail back to manufactuer and he did something addition with internal chokes and resolved the SSB problem totally. That is why when buy amp always good to send radio, so tech make all proper adjusts between your specific radio and the amp. Good Luck. I know the waiting can be a ball buster !! I hear ya.

solarradio351
04-11-2014, 08:57 AM
It happens on transmission only and its a chatter all right... one meter says rig is 4.5w another says 6.2w (ish).... I don't know what its doing its all a big expensive guess ... being in the bush makes it impossible to get help.. I can't lower or raise the power on grant, I will stuff it up, I don't know what to look for got told horse shoe but can't see it and would be a total guess that's bound to back fire in my face... so power from rig ?? Not the power source ?

solarradio351
04-11-2014, 09:01 AM
All above is the rig on am... have only touched key on am and it shut hole system down that was off converters 60amps supposed to be 60 should I say... only rig and amp on this ...

I think 5 watts dead key is too much IMO. You should be able to turn the power down on am on your radio , have you tried keying the amp on ssb with different settings on the delay slider?

222DBFL
04-11-2014, 01:05 PM
And the thing is what or how is the 5 watts in measured is that a pep of 5 watts in or a dead key of 5 watts, big difference. I can't find anything yet for that amp let me keep looking though. If it shut your 60 amp supply down its pulling a lot of amps for 400 watts, what are the transistors? Are they the mrf455??

04-12-2014, 02:14 AM
If the amp works on am, then there is sonething wrong with the ssb delay or the way the bias is set up. Have you tried messing with the delay for ssb at all? I am at a loss myself as it seems like it should work on ssb. Have you talked to tallman about the issue? He may know the answer to the issue. Hope you get it resolved. Wish i could help more but i am not an expert when it comes to trouble shooting radios and amps. I have learned a lot by experience and from the forums. Anyway good luck and god bless.

After all the lack of power comments I put this monster cable from battery's

1715

Still chatters on ssb and 025 said I sounded really bad , could hardly understand me.... on am I can get it to work but delay still is a problem takes a moment to disengage after you stop transmission...
So what's your best guess ? No ssb bias ? Bias or something not working..... 351 quack quack...

222DBFL
04-12-2014, 05:00 AM
Got to be something to do with that relay or the amp has bias issues. I know it's not what you would like to hear. Either that or try redoing the ground on the rear and get rid of the current terminal lug on the wire and put a new one on. Next as you are speaking with you friend, move the slider where it says ssb and keep slowing moving it and see if you still sound bad. It is normal for the relay to stay on for a sec after you un key. If it's working on am, there is some thing else going on. Make sure that the contacts are all clean on the ssb delay and that the relay is clean and doesn't look bad. Keep working with it. In the end, it may need to be sent off with the radio so that they can be matched. I know more bs. Just about like every other hobby I have dabbled in, rc cars it was parts!! Order parts and wait lol. Anyway keep trying and have you spoken with tallman about the amp as well??

solarradio351
04-12-2014, 05:28 AM
Have asked if it was tested on ssb but he is probably busy for now, when he see's the pm I will know.. the lug on rear was just replaced buy Tallman so I can't see that being a problem.. I did move the ssb delay when I had 025 helping me test it but it still chattered found a spot were there is no chatter till you talk then it happens a bit lighter chatter but still there ... What it comes down to is a second hand mistake, seller says he has made ssb contacts with it.. mmmm
Just another bad run the mfj gauge is just not right so all round big step backwards .. I do appreciate you throwing some ideas about ! That's how sometimes you can find the issues.. cheers 222

solarradio351
04-12-2014, 05:38 AM
Would it do that if radio is under powering it ? 025 did not say overdriving and he knows what that sounds like..

222DBFL
04-12-2014, 11:27 AM
No it's not over driven there is something amiss with the ssb delay IMO. That or it is not an ssb amp. Wait for tallmans response and let me know, what's the issue with the meter??

NY714
04-12-2014, 12:39 PM
FYI, there is more to making an amp sound good on SSB,more than putting in a relay switch. Internal works needs to be done to the Biasing. Alot of amp builder just put the switch and call it ready for SSB, doesn't work that way.

This is understood sir. Please read the whole thread, I understand that there is a lot more than a switch and relay. I am not an amp builder, but have seen my share and had a few. The poster bought an amp that he is having issues with on ssb, amp bought on eBay, read above, any and all input is greatly appreciated as we are all here to learn. We have been PM about the issue he is having and he can't nail it down, amp works fine on am, has ssb delay potometer that goes from slow to fast delay, seller told him that he used it on ssb. He is not getting good reports with it on ssb.

I think it's my cheap inverter making all the racket. I have a good real good charge controller. Midnite solar classic 150 so I doubt that is the problem. http://www.civicsolar.com/product/midnite-solar-classic-150-mppt-charge-controller On the other hand my inverter is a Wagan 5000 (read cheap). It works well for a square wave but does cause some problems. http://www.donrowe.com/Wagan-5000-Pro-Line-Power-Inverter-p/wag5000c.htm Mine isn't the "pro Line" but you get the idea and only cost $419 new.

Yes all the non-amplified D-104's without battery at bottom are meant for Ham radio's where they have like a pre-amp in them. If you need a base D-104 Silver Eagle, tug-8, or any Eagle must make sure that they are amplified with 9 volt battery in bottom. Also have to make sure that the battery wasn't left in there for years and exploded and destroyed the connector as well as sometimes the circuit board. Also must open up the Mic head and make sure there is a MC-320 Cartridge in it, or it may of been swapped out for a cheaper one that doesn't sound as good. I had that happen many of time but always bought threw Ebay and was protected by Ebays new Buyer protection, so got my money back and didn't even have to pay return shipping. Must always check with sellers on these D-104's Base Mic's and there are alot of different versions but what I said above goes for all USA CB's and Export CB Radio's.
Usually 100% of time when no battery in base mic they are designed for PA Systems and will work well with Ham Radio's. Also have to be careful with the Turner Series Base Mic's.

They all pretty much sound the same as long as amplified with 9 volt battery and has original MC-320 Mic Cartridge when open head to check, because alot of ebay sellers take out the original one and put in aftermarket cheap ones. But as for the Silver Eagles, Night Eagles, and Gold Eagles all have same loud punchy audio just cosmetically different.

Build yourself a dipole for 11 meters, this is simple, really it is, 2 wires, a couple insulators (I used PVC conduit fittings that I had laying around, some #12awg, and so-239 connector), and a so239 connector, got that from an old swr meter that was a POS. Put that up 30-40 ft either horizontal or inverted v, and you can talk some dx without breaking the bank! They work and also can be bought pre made for under 30 dollars with a matching Balun to boot. I just used wire, insulators and a so-239 connector, made an air choke with excess coax about 8-10ft from connection to the dipole and it worked wonderfully, talked across the pond and well into Germany and France as well, and of course the UK. Point is, you don't have to spend a bunch of coin and have to worry about much with a dipole and they will handle a bit of power as well. I wouldn't put more than 500-1000 watts through a good one, but the one I made could have handle a few hundred watts no problem. And it worked like this, above ground between 2 trees or whatever you can find to hang them off of, either end that is, higher is better. Mine was about 30ft at its tallest and I talked pretty far with it like that using the uniden pc122xl, stock no amp. Made several Europe contacts and some others as well. Have a look at them if you have a chance or pm me and I will help if you want to make one. Don't let BS get you down. This hobby is full of a lot of BS, sometimes you have to put the wading boots on and get through!! Keep your head up mate and hope the move goes well. God bless and 73's.

It's always darkest just before dawn. Things will get better somehow someway. Keep your chin up and enjoy the good life you have made there. I know what a bitch it can be. I am having a fight right now with stumps and roots I paid $2000 to have gotten up. The sob covered them up now I have broken my plow twice and tractor once and just barely started on this field where our crops are supposed to go this year. I may have two more weeks I can plant before I loose my chance for crops this year. It's been such a bitch of a year with weather and such or this would have been done already. Now work is keeping me to busy to have much of a chance but I'll keep plugging away until times up and after. That way things will be ready next year anyway.

Good Luck

Well said stang. 351 like I said before, I know you can get the base setup proper, no doubts about that mate. Just trying to help ease the pain of Having to waiting longer for an antenna to dx with, an 11m dipole put up 30-40ft between 2 trees or hung as an inverted v, will work great for dx'ing and I promise can be made with minimal scrap parts. A piece of wire #12awg, 18-20ft total, 2 insulators of your choice. I used sone leftover flex conduit non metallic fittings for insulators and a scrap so-239 connector I stole from a pos watt meter that didn't work, think most of us have 1 or 2 of those lol. Anyway like I said before, you can and will get it right, sometimes there can be hiccups, it's part of the hobby. Just be careful where you buy from, and heck u bet you could build a heck of an antenna with some space and some copper tubing. There are other options is all I'm saying. Don't give up this far into it mate. Been hearing a bit of Aussie late at night, heard some tonight. Maybe the day will come again when we can speak to each other. I truly would like to do that again!!! It's possible, conditions just have to be right and I have to be there to catch it. One day, one day my friend. Sweet, just make sure to put an adequate concrete pad and use the proper bolts that won't rust, galvanized. Looks like you could use a 1" red head concrete lag for the base, maybe larger. The larger the better and don't Forget to double nut the base. Sorry you probably already know all this, been doing tower and ground audits lately so have seen the right way to do things on large towers. Anyway looks good, now get that antenna up lol.
