Is that the AM/SSB version, or just AM?

I have one just like it, that is the SSB version...Nice radios...Little on the heavy-side tho if you go to mounting it in a mobile...Do you have both the AC and DC power cords? Those are what is hard to come-by if you don't have them...almost impossible to fine anymore.

What i did to get around always having to have a Mic wired for 5 pin, just for that radio, is I had a local CB Shop make me a pig-tail adapter so I could use any 4-pin (cobra-galaxy) Mic with it...Since the Mic jack is on the side of the radio, a pig-tail adapter works allot better than just using one of those 4/5 pin screw-on adapters...

The New Uniden 680,880, and 980's all come from the factory with pig-tail adapters so you can run 4-pin Mic's.

Yeah its the AM/SSB version. I'm having a Turner +3 wired for it soon and I'm going to have thr radio cranked up a bit. I plan on just using it for a base setup.

I have three of those. Do you have all of the power cords for it? The AC and DC cords are hard to find unless you know where to look.

i mounted it outside with the bottom antenna (grounplane) horizontal. for now its mounted to a shepherds hook outside the garage window. i managed to gain 2 S units by doing so. im planning on changing my top antenna to a 102" whip for better signal and putting the firestik on as a 2nd part of the ground plane.

Nice, I'm glad you finally got a base unit. What other radios did you get to pick from? Did you post any picture of your antenna caveman??

I got to choose from a 40 channel realistic navaho trc -432, a 23 channel cobra cam 89, a old Royce base that was a little rough, a 40 channel cobra 93 ltd, and a big 23 channel teaberry base. But I chose the sears because it had all the features I needed. Only complaint is it does not take 4 pin mics:(

Right on. Have you made contact with it yet?? How are your SWRs with your antenna setup you built?

I also have the base bug. I think it's only because I'm totally off air at the moment. I'm sure the bug will pass.

My SWR is 1.3 on channel 1 and 1.6 on channel 40. The furthest ive talked is around 15 miles with my base setup.

Its an AM/SSB radio. I can do at the most around 15 miles AM and maybe a little more on SSB.

my dipole is only about 8 foot to the tip so its not an ideal DX setup.

Okay, makes sense, if possible, get it up to 20-30ft and you can talk locally and dx with it, I was able to anyway. Find 2 trees, I used a tree and a couple of 1" conduits. Cost wasn't much as I had some of the components. But a dipole can really work if setup right.

i will probably get a push up pole to put it on. my dipole is not a wire dipole. it is made from 2 fiberglass antennas. one is vertical and that is my transmit antenna. the other is horizontal and is grounded to the mount as a ground plane. im adding a 2nd ground plane radial. it works better than it did after i actually got it up in the air little more.

His mobile radio set up is way better than most "Base Stations". I know this because I built his radio and "Other things" that make a big difference. He talked to Hawaii from Central Texas on 3.8 watts on his Cobra 29. His firestik antenna has a beautiful sky wave.

I would like to think the install has a little to do with that also. You can have the best radio and other gear, but if the installation isnt done properly your gear isn't going to perform worth a squat.... yes??

THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERLOOKED ASPECTS OF RADIO. Any gorillia can install a radio but to do it right takes time, planing and experience. And dont put the antenna in the center of the damn toolbox. Go with the drivers side swrs are lower, there is more suport and strength at the corner, and the bushes, mailboxes trees/limbs are on the pasenger side. IMO wich aint much but close to right on this one.

Tallman
03-03-2014, 01:23 PM
I would say that is every bit as important as starting with good gear. If you have cables just looping around like a temporary install performance will suffer. I haven't had a vehicle good enough to do a proper install for a while.

The "Sweet Heart Deals" are for close family only, not even first cousins rate deals this good!

A good man ( like Tallman) can call his bargain deals any dam thing he wants... A good deal is just that.... my 2 cents worth... 351...( just love a great deal no matter what it called)..... :-)
