I've been running CBs now for a couple years, but haven't done much shopping around. Now that I'm actually looking into things like meters, mics, etc., I've noticed a weird trend.

A lot of products seem to be exactly the same item with somebody else's name printed on it and sometimes a slight re-wording of some labels. For example, these two meters.

http://www.amazon.com/ASTATIC-PDC7-Compact-Meter-302-01768/dp/B000VXKINA/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1395036447&sr=8-6&keywords=astatic+swr+meter

http://www.amazon.com/SWR-METER-Test-Radio-Antennas/dp/B00042LCBA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395036437&sr=8-1&keywords=workman+swr-2t

Are these all just companies that buy mass produced circuit boards and parts and assemble them themselves or what? Why are so many generic hand mics branded by different companies when they were very obviously manufactured by one single company seeing as how they are totally identical?

The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to learn brand names, who is good, who is bad, etc., but it's kind of hard to pick between some of these cheaper offerings when they are all exactly the same thing.

The more radios you open up, the more familiar things will start looking. Try opening a few unidens and cobras and let us know what you find. Open up a few galaxy's connex rangers and generals too and report back.
