I'm brand new to radios. This is all foreign to me. First off does anyone have a good place to start, to get a good base knowledge so I know what I'm looking g for. Second I have a old sbe Trinidad II base. It has a pa/cb switch. Im looking for a decwnt antenna to start with. Like to stay as close to or under $100 as possible. What should I be looking for? Th, much appreciated.

Antron 99 is a decent base antenna, and be found for around $80...I would try and get it at least 20-25' up in the air. (the base of the antenna needs to be at least 20-25' up)...30' would be better... attach a ground cable/wire off the bottom of the pole you have the antenna on, and run it to a 9' ground rod about 10' away from the base of the pole for added lightning protection...

Good starter set-up...Antron 99 is rated to 2K watts...but I wouldn't try running that kind of power into one.

Lot of guys have good luck with the Sirio Tornado antenna's, but I have also herd they don't handle strong windy areas too good...around the same price (maybe less) as the Antron...

Better antenna's will run you closer to the $200 mark.

if you live in a mild weather area get a sirio vector 4000 . if a tougher environment the penetrator 500 ... but they'll be $150ish . if you have to stay under 100 the w58 for 85 + shipping is a decent antenna including ground elements .

I have used the maco V5/8 antenna now since about 1997 and it still works just fine. when I bought mine it was 79.99 shipped to the house back then. the newer versions are even better than the old ones. they use a little better metal in them now. can not go wrong with one of them. the only thing I ever had happen to mine was the ground plane radials broke off during a ice storm. all I did was trim them off some and put slots back in the tube so they would clamp back on. did not effect the swr at all.
