1 (http://www.comportco.com/~w5alt/antennas/notes/ant-notes.php?pg=20)/4 wave ground-planes are very sensitive to their ground plane and need full 1/4 wavelength for best performance . and the angle of those elements effect the tuning of the antenna .
a 1/2 wave ground plane can be used without any ground elements , examples of this are the antron 99 and the ringo . IMO , i'd still use 1/4 wave ground elements ..... unless there just wasn't room for them .
5/8 wave ground-planes can be used without ground elements too , but typically perform better with them .

Awesome information MONSTER. I appreciate you putting that together. I'm currently using an antron-99 without and ground elements, but this has made me reconsider that. Much appreciated.

You mean you don't have a proper ground system setup or you aren't using the ground plane radial kit with your A99? If so, add a good 1:1 isolating balun at the feedpoint to kill any CMC issues at the feedpoint and make sure you have a proper ground system. Look up how they ground commercial towers for cell sites and such and you'll get the idea of a proper grounding system then. As for adding the GPK kit, it helps with CMC issues, and may make your receive a bit quieter. Other than that, with a good 1:1 isolating balun or even a wound coax choke will help with CMC issues. Having a proper ground system is a must IMO though.

you can make a GP for less than 10 bucks to see it it will benefit you buy or build something more durable/prettier . get two 10 ft pieces of schedule 40 3/4 or 1 inch pvc pipe (i prefer 1 inch) and the correct size 4 way and some glue . cut the two 10 ft pieces down to 5 ft . glue them to the 4 way so you have a X shape . use 16 gauge or larger wire (solid or stranded) and cut four 9 ft 3 inch pieces . drill holes at the ends of the X to attach the wires to and attach the other ends to the bolts that mount your antenna to it's mast . tape/secure the cross section of the X to the mast so it doesn't flop around freely . the photo above is where i used that on my first home made groundplane (1/4 wave) . i used the exact same GP when i built my first .64 gp .
