Has any body ever noticed how narrow banded wilson 5000 antenna's are ? It is so narrow banded that when I set the swr's to flat on the bowl, they ended up being 1.4 on channel. When I used to run the wilson 1000 I was able tune it flat from channel 1-40. Why is that, is it because the 5000 has different impedence or is it just an engineering flaw they had. I spoke to alot of guys running the 5000 and they noticed the same problem with them being narrow banded.

most of the wilson antenna's out there you have to cut off 1/4 to 1 inch off of the bottom of the whip to get a flat match on some aplications not all . for starters make sure you run the 18 feet of coax recomended. you might have to place the antenna on different areas on ya roof . not every car or truck has a great match . i never had a problem with the wilson being narrow banded , that is not true at all . i can get a 1.0 on like 60 plus channels before it starts climbing up . if anything that antenna is very broadbanded the totall opposite. make sure all ya connections are good . watch out for that crazy non conducting tape they have on now at the bottom of the magnet mounts . they need to be ripped off to get a good ground . thats the only problem i had with them . :pacman:

when running just the radio i get a flat match across all 40 .but with the amp on i can only get about a 25 channel spead of acceptable swr .i tune for ch28 as thats where i shoot skip when i get the chance .with a 500 watt deadkey i get a 1.1-1.2 swr on that channel .
by the time i get to ch1 i wont even use the amp down that low .its a trade off .i cant get the whole 40 spread low enough to run my 500 watt deadkey .
by the time i get to ch1 with the amp on my swr is about a 1.7 and i wont run it like that .

sometimes its all in the amp tuning too.

try using an 18 foot jumper from the radio to the box stay away from 9 footers . 12 is ok 18 is better . if you have a driver box before the bigger box, a 6 foot or a 9 foot jumper is fine between the boxs. sometimes these class ab-1 linears dont have the best tuning along with some of these so called class c amplifier builders now a days , lol lol lol lol

i have a mag mount5000 coming off a Phillipine 148GTL running barefoot mounted dead center of the roof on my Jeep G.Cherokee Ltd. right now and i get a good tune through all 40 and up to 60 or 70 but once i get up to 80 or 90 to 100 it jumps up in the 1.4 range but i don't ever transmit outside of the normal 40 since there really aren't that many people in my area that are still on CB anymore.the ones that are on,stay within ssb and am.

the fatboy fb-r4 is a copy of the 55 they work pretty good the original terry 55's may be a little harder to come by unless you can find someone with his number i run these knock offs but ive seen the originals and they are welded much nicer and just look cleaner built then mine heres is a link to the fatboys

I also run a FB R4 - its been thru quite a bit - great antenna- durable... as mine has been thru alot and no problems. So far my noizy built is my best all around, high quality, talker, tuned awasome. I use the wilson when i know im going into unfriendly antenna areas.

oh wow, those look pretty heavy duty.and they perform better than the Wilson's?and they are less expensive.i really like the look of those antennas.they look comp-ready.unlike the Wilson's which are just a metal whip,i like the coil on these ones.

I hate the wilson..Im forced to use the Wilson 5k when i go into nyc for work... Southern State has low bridges.. Joe.. Jessies Stargun is the perfect size. Anything in the works for a lower ant that can beat this wilson 5k?

Thanks

WOW that does suck Lumpy.i hope it all works out for you rather quickly.i know how long the insurance process can take.

anyways,i have a Wilson5000 hooked up to my Philly Cobra 148GTL amped with a 2pill(Toshibe SC-2879's)Magnum2000 that pushes 260peak(haven't really used it in the 8months i've had it but will today now i have it back from the shop)...... anyways,i have used omy 5000 and my 500 and both have tunes almost perfectly, nothing abouve 1.3 from 1to40 and most of the time i can get up to 60with a good tune, and once in a whle up to 70.once i hit 90 and above i am close as hell to 1.6 or so.
regerdless,i do get a good tune with my mag mount 5000 and also my 5000(Wilson's).
i have heard that the newer Wilson's are made by a new company(?)or something like that but i have head that the newer ones are cheaper and suck when tuning them on some set-ups and vehicles.i've got a full sized roof on my Jeep Grand Cherokee so maybe it's your car''s grounding/size of the roof,or it could be one of the newer Wilson's that i've heard are generally shitty.good luck either way.

i had a wilson 1000 once many years ago locked my keys in my car at a nightclub in the middle of nowhere when i finally went to leave early in the am everyone was gone and me and my friend that i was with realized i locked the keys in the car it was a pickup truck so i had to cut my coax and i held it by the whip and swung it into the side window to shatter the window lol it worked good for that but it was winter and cold as hell for the 1.5hr ride home lol

I've never had a problem tuning my Wilson Mag mount except for having to cut about 1/2" off the stinger but I rarely go below 26.675. Other than that I usualy stay on 14, 19, or sometimes 28 and even shot a little skip with a 2x2879 Golden Eagle 377 with no problems. Of course it's one of the older ones before Wilson started changing hands.

I use a 5000 and had to trim it twice to get it just right. If you do trim, just do very little each time until spot on.

i have had good luck with my 1000 and 5000 and haven't had to trim them or even adjust them up or down.well i think i may have adjusted my 5000 up a very little bit but it's all been smooth sailing since putting either of them on my vehicles.i have had them on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and on a Saturn SL2 4door car,oh yeah also a little Subaru Outback Impreza Wagon Sport and all has been pretty perfect with both antennas.but,i haven'r run any power through them other than stock radio power so who knows what will happen if/when i do run real power into them.both my 1000 and 5000 are mag mounts.

Probably could have poked the whip down through the door and unlocked your truck instead of smashing the window... Although just having left a nightclub, your decision-making skills were probably a bit wonky. I have unlocked several cars using a radio antenna, when a coat hanger wasnt readily available.
