Was running Barefoot today in my van with my 979 and K40 antenna when I made contact with 3 Canadians. One was from Nova Scotia and the others were Eastern Canada. What surprised me is I'm from N/E PA. and skip wasn't really rolling much so I thought that was pretty cool for my barefoot 979 running on 38 lsb. Especially when the radio has been really dead around here lately!:300 (170):

Good for you! Your doing better than me lately. It's been deader than a door nail in western MA. I turn on my radio and all I hear are crickets!!!

The north south skip is from back scatter, usually around sunrise and sunset.

I have to laugh because back scatter is way over my head. But you could enlighten us poor lost souls. LOL

Sorry to hear your misfortune! I thought it was just my area. The water trucks in the natural gas business even haven't been yakking. I'm getting ready to raise my Star Duster another 4' just because I can. I haven't really heard skip activity. Where I caught the Canadians was at our hunting camp high upon the mountain. If I was a younger man I would set up my other Star Duster there and another Base Station.

I was working in my shack two days ago and Jamaica was booming in. Then gone.

Back scatter is when an RF wave propagates as far as its energy can take it and the solar energy takes over and spreads it further, some times back towards the transmitter or into an area that is not accessable by skip, usually under 600 miles. The Antenna Specialist M-400 Starduster is an excellent skip antenna as it has a high take off angle for the RF wave.

Thanks for the lesson in radio waves, it's always good to learn something new. Your the 2nd radio man that told me the M400 is good for skip. I guess a man has to get Lucky once in a while! LOL
