View Full Version : This is our DX problem??

We could be down for awhile possibly. It isn't as dire as initially portrayed here and predictions are better towards the end. They wanted to grab you in the beginning. They do say sunspot activity is at a 100 year low. As I write this however today Nov 27 2020 the skip is rolling a bit . Heard Texas and he said he has spoken to CA and RI today.

Sun Entering into 'Deep Solar Slowdown', Experts Predict Dark Days Ahead

A few days ago, I was driving around in my pick-up, listening to some of the lower channels... 1-6. I was listening to some guy from Georgia... also heard a guy, that said he was from Central Kentucky. They were coming in so loud and clear. It sounded, as if they were about, a mile down the road. I am from Washington St. They, were REALLY reaching out!

Skip has been rolling around my area for the past few days and I've been hearing from places I never really heard from before. I haven't been able to make any contacts so I have to dig into the problem a little more.

Yes when I posted this I later turned on my radio and stuff was bombing in . Heard CA TX Canada and all over the Midwest. I live in Western MA. Then nothing. I read on the scientific news that a sun spot was spotted on the sun before it had turned to face us. They can somehow sense when a sun spot is happening even before it turns to face us. The sun Nov 29th 2020.

Solar Flares today

Coronal holes

Coronal mass ejections

Skip is sort of like women or the weather! ( Unpredictable ) LOL

There also certain times of the day when activity would be higher due to the expanding of the E2 layer in the atmoshpere due to solar heating. Sunspots are more likely to interfere than enhance skip activity.

Interesting I thought it was the opposite.

Sunspots are different then CME (coronal mass ejection) as normal sunspots that indicate the solar state will increase skip conditions but a CME is a huge bundle of free electrons that induce EMF into any length of wire or exposed conductor and block or override receivers over the entire spectrum. NASA has a "space weather" site that can provide more detail and updtaed conditions. Back scatter results when the RF signal travels in the direction of the setting or rising sun and when it loses its energy, gets swept up by the solar wind and "scattered" across the E2 layer.

UPDATE: For what it is worth. Since my last post on this thread. I have not heard ANY skip at all. I have not been on the radio much lately (2-3) times a week. But, nothing at all on skip.

Don't feel alone ! Skip hasn't been doing much around here either. It's pot luck catching it and there isn't as much local chat either !

Nothing for me lately either. Rather depressing.

I caught a little skip the other day when I was going to pick up motorcycle parts with my Chevy Cobalt but that Tram 300 antenna on it isn't a real good skip talker, but it fits in the garage door so I put up with it, and it matches the size of the car. LOL
