Whatever the length of the element, it's the matching element that establishes the transfer of power to the main radiating element. Sometimes called a gamma match or some other trademarked name, but it is the connection to the power and sets the SWR basically and is fine tuned by the selected length of the radiating element. This is true for omni-directional and beam type antennas. Using a balun (matching transformer) any length of element can be used, most often for long wire setups.

I'll put my full-wave length L4 quad up against any 1/2 wave or 1/4 wave 4 element antenna (or ground plane), any day of the week!

I've had them all, and nothing comes close to a full wave antenna when it comes to distance.:encouragement::pop2:

My dipole slung in a tree is doing the job for me...made contacts last week on LSB with Jamaica, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Ireland & several US states in east, central & west.

Antenna wise...I have to remain incognito as the bride says "Nerp, not having no 100ft tower & Collosal 10 ground plane like your father has at his house!"...

Yes, you can't beat a full wavelength. Or multiples. When camping in the real wilderness (no power lines within 20 miles) I like to use a bow and arrow to string long lines across the tops of the trees, multiple lines in compass directions can yield some serious skip over thousands of miles with just the 25 W PEP sideband.
