1500 or sweet 16 . keep either under 1000 PEP/modulated power

2879's are 100 watt pep transistors according to Toshiba , the company that manufactures them . yes , they can show more on a watt meter but just doubling power has little real effect for a typical user and it will be the rare occasion that the difference is noticed in the form of making a contact that couldn't be made with half the power . however the doubling of power will add harmonics to your signal that can bleed into you or your neighbors electronics and can also cause splattering across multiple channels miles away for other cb'ers in your area .

http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/toshiba/1468.pdf

i feel the the trade off isn't worth aggravating other radio operators miles away and neighbors or yourself in your home isn't worth the trivial once in a blue moon benefit ..... but you'll have to decide for yourself if you want to run a clean setup or a over driven station getting complaints from neighbors and other radio operators tuning to the source of splatter interfering with their receive . some folks take great pride in getting those complaints though ..... ignorance is bliss for them .

BTW .... look at the spec sheet and take note of the 6-10 watt typical to max input for max rated power . then scroll down to the IMD-po graph look at how the distortion is steadily rising after 60 watts ... they rate it at 100 watts because that's what they can cleanly do ... not because that all its capable of .

clean or dirty , it's your money and your property and your decision on how to run it .

the radio may produce decent peak but nor average. a built in 2 pill section does more then your radio does. and that amp dont blow. if in doubt get the 6 pill tnt

afred, read the data sheet. its at 12.5 volts. 14.4 produces much more power and still be clean.

dont buy anything without a fan cooled amplifier !

whatever you buy, I would stay away from Texas Star period....Don't get me wrong they are badass boxes but not heavy duty...You will have problems down the road....I would buy a competition box....Davemade,Fatboy,X-Force....or build your own.....If you do build your own, plan for the future...what do I mean???? Buy an enclosure, heatsinc and circuit board big enough for at least 16 pills, this way you will have room to expand and the more heatsink area will keep those pills cool....run fans also make sure you get fans that will take the higher voltage.....

how much more clean power do you expect to get from a 2879 at 14.4 volts vs, 12.5 ?
i know ameritron expects 150 from them .

are these word of experience or someone else's and noting that the 2879's are rated @ **** at 12.5 volts
dc voltage
automotive votage systems run tipicaly @13.8- 14.5 vdc, with a fully charged battery
if your driving down the road @ 12.5 vdc somethings wrong , and you'll soon be a walkin

the words are from the experience of Tom, W8JI . For those of you who do not know, Tom is the chief DESIGNER of amplifiers for Ameritron both solidstate and tube types.

Hey Booty,

I know this is an old thread but your comment on the sweet 16 caught my eye.

Currently running a 2970N2 and have been looking at adding a 16. Wilson 5K in Chevy truck.
Do you think I will have to upgrade the alt. in the truck? Already have EVERYTHING grounded and strapped.
Your opinion?

Is that for a Base or mobile? At any rate It should put out pretty darn good. I'm looking at that 600 hd they have for the pickup. It looks pretty good on paper anyway. Well go out and have some fun with that puppy.

Ive been looking at either a small Fatboy, TNT, texas star, or a midnight special for the mobeal. Ive been leaning toward the Texas star amps.
