Here is the MFJ-801 Field Strength Meter from MFJ Enterprises Inc. It is advertised for 2M/400 but actually usable from 100 KHz to 500MHz. This complete with a telescopic antenna that extends to 16.5" and sensitivity control. Requires no battery because it uses the power from a transmitted signal. Small in size and fits will in your palm. To complete the circuit your palm must touch the screw on the right side. The meter is easy to read and reacts very quickly. A field strength meter is a must for those who would have a need to know your antenna radiating pattern. Great to test from one antenna to another. Useful when making adjustments, you will get instant readings. Troubleshoot rf leakage. Now in the mobile your vehicle's outer skin is actually acting as a shield over you. Example I had the meter in the truck and keyed up my 150 watt Galaxy. Turned the sensitivity up and detected no rf. But as soon as I opened the window and stuck it outside the readings were way up there. So this tell me my counterpoise is genuine and no rf leakage. No rf readings in back of the radio or on the coax. All rf going to the antenna! See this is one function you can perform. In time I will be checking my other mobile antennas and gathering data. At the small price of $29.95 you will now have a way to measure the field strength of your transmitted signal. The meter is not tight. For example my Galaxy DX 959 with 2290 Toshiba power mod dead keys 5 watts and peaks at about 150 watts. When I modulate the meter shows the increase just as quick as my voice...instantly without delay. Another nice instrument for the station, Bulldog.
