FBI, Boston police go into overdrive in marathon bombing probe

By Jana Winter (http://www.foxnews.com/archive/author/jana-winter/index.html)
Published April 16, 2013

The FBI and state and local police are intensifying their probe into Monday's bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, vowing a "worldwide investigation" and appealing to the public for tips and cellphone pictures that might yield clues about who was behind the horrific attack.
No suspects have been named, but new details are slowly emerging in the attack, which killed three and injured at least 176. Two bombs went off just before 3 p.m., shattering a festive atmosphere several hours after the legendary race began on the city's 238th annual Patriots' Day. An 8-year-old boy was among the dead and several runners and spectators suffered severe injuries, including severed limbs as the bombs sent shrapnel flying.
"This will be a worldwide investigation," Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI's Boston Field Office Richard DesLauriers said at a Tuesday morning news conference, adding that investigators will go "wherever the leads take us."
"We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the suspects responsible for this despicable crime," he added.
"We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the suspects responsible for this despicable crime."
- Richard DesLauriers, FBI special-agent-in-charge

It remained unclear if the bombs were the work of a homegrown or foreign threat, but in Washington, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel called the attack "a cruel act of terror."
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis appealed to the public to come forward with any information or photographic evidence that might help authorities zero in on the killers.
"We’re looking to bring the individuals responsible for this heinous crime to justice," he said.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said the two bombs were the only explosive devices found in the area, discounting prior reports that more unexploded devices had been discovered.
"Two and only two explosive devices were found yesterday," Patrick said.
Authorities searched an apartment in the nearby Boston suburb of Revere as part of the investigation into the explosions. FoxNews.com saw federal, state and local law enforcement entering the building late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Sources confirmed to FoxNews.com that the apartment being searched in connection to the bombings is on the fifth floor of the building.
A source close to the investigation confirms to FoxNews.com the man whose apartment was searched is considered a person of interest in the case. He is the same person of interest Fox News confirmed earlier who authorities are guarding at a local hospital. The source stressed that the person of interest is not a suspect, and said he suffered serious injuries in the explosion.
The FBI has a lot of leads and "a lot of work to do" in the investigation, a law enforcement source said. The source said the investigation is "very fluid" and the FBI is looking at many, many people.
Investigators were seen leaving the Revere house early Tuesday carrying brown paper bags, plastic trash bags and a duffel bag, according to the Associated Press.
The Pakistani Taliban, which has threatened attacks in the United States because of its support for the Pakistani government, denied any role in the marathon bombings Tuesday.
The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, denied involvement in a telephone call with The Associated Press. He spoke from an undisclosed location.
Federal investigators said Monday no one had claimed responsibility for the devastating attack on one of the city's most famous civic holidays, Patriots' Day.
At Massachusetts General Hospital, Alasdair Conn, chief of emergency services, said: "This is something I've never seen in my 25 years here ... this amount of carnage in the civilian population. This is what we expect from war."
The first two explosions occurred at 2:50 p.m. – nearly five hours after the marathon began – about 50 to 100 yards apart, according to Davis. A third explosion occurred near the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in the Columbia Point section of Dorchester, several miles southeast of the marathon's finish line, at around 4:15 p.m. Police could not say if it was related to the earlier explosions.
The horror unfolded as the city marked the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the bloody chaos, while some witnesses reported seeing victims with lost limbs.
"Somebody's leg flew by my head," a spectator, who gave his name as John Ross, told the Boston Herald. “I gave my belt to stop the blood.”
Twenty-six people were transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital, including a 3-year-old, who was then taken to a children's hospital. A doctor at the hospital said at least two of the patients there are in critical condition and that some have burns and injuries that will likely require amputations.
"They just started bringing people in with no limbs," said runner Tim Davey of Richmond, Va. He said he and his wife, Lisa, tried to shield their children's eyes from the gruesome scene inside a medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners, but "they saw a lot."
"They just kept filling up with more and more casualties," Lisa Davey said. "Most everybody was conscious. They were very dazed."
Witnesses heard booms that sounded like two claps of thunder near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel, according to multiple local reports. Video of the scene showed a number of emergency crews in the area tending to victims and blood on the ground near the finish line.
"I saw two explosions. The first one was beyond the finish line. I heard a loud bang and I saw smoke rising," Boston Herald reporter Chris Cassidy, who was running in the marathon, told the newspaper. "I kept running and I heard behind me a loud bang. It looked like it was in a trash can or something...There are people who have been hit with debris, people with bloody foreheads.”
"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.
About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another thunderous explosion could be heard a few seconds later.
Runner Laura McLean of Toronto said she heard two explosions outside the medical tent.
"There are people who are really, really bloody," McLean said. "They were pulling them into the medical tent."
Cherie Falgoust was waiting for her husband, who was running the race. "I was expecting my husband any minute," she said. "I don't know what this building is ... it just blew. Just a big bomb, a loud boom, and then glass everywhere. Something hit my head. I don't know what it was. I just ducked."
Authorities in New York, meanwhile, are deploying counterterrorism vehicles around landmark sites in Manhattan, including prominent hotels, according to the New York City Police Department.
Nearly 25,000 people, including runners from around the world, competed in Boston's celebrated 26.2-mile race, attracting huge throngs of onlookers, especially near the finish line.
Anyone with information on the bombings is being urged to call Boston authorities at 1-800-494-TIPS.

WASHINGTON An intelligence bulletin issued to law enforcement includes a picture of a mangled pressure cooker and a torn black bag that the FBI says were part of a bomb that exploded during the Boston marathon.
The bulletin was obtained by The Associated Press.
Both explosive devices used in the Boston Marathon attack appear to have been placed in metal pressure cookers packed with nails and ball bearings designed to amplify the damage from the explosions, CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports.

FBI investigates Boston bombings as "terrorism"

(http://www.cbjunkies.com/video/watch/?id=50144977n)Investigators believe the bombs were hidden in black nylon backpacks and housed inside sealable metal pots called pressure cookers. Pressure cooker bombs can help boost the power of relatively small devices by briefly constraining the blast. And when the cookers do explode, they can add large chunks of metal to the shrapnel spray. The IEDs have been popular with terrorists. Al Qaeda published a how-to recipe in an online Jihadi magazine. Several of the bombs were used in the 2006 attack on trains in Mumbai, India.
The details on the explosives emerged as the chief FBI agent in Boston made a public appeal for any tips to help identify suspects. At a news conference late Tuesday afternoon in Boston, FBI Special Agent in Charge, Richard Deslauriers, indicated that the range of suspect and motive is "wide open," and that the investigation is still in its "infancy." He also mentioned that the FBI had received about 2,000 tips as of noon as agents looked for any photographic or video evidence from witnesses.
Deslauriers also said that both explosive devices appears to have been placed in a black nylon bag or backpack. A law enforcement source told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton that investigators also found pieces of an electronic circuit board possibly indicating a timer was used in the detonation of the bomb. Orr reports that investigators have now recovered pieces of the backpacks and the pressure cookers; however, at the moment, the FBI does not know how the bombs were triggered.
A law enforcement official told CBS News that the two bombs that exploded were made to look like discarded property. It is still unknown if one or both bombs were in garbage cans. One may have been on the sidewalk.
The bombs were described as "low explosive," but with "anti-personnel" packing. The official said there were apparently things like BB's, ball bearings and nails in the bombs. This is consistent with doctors reporting shrapnel pulled from victims.
A doctor treating the wounded said one of the victims was maimed by what looked like ball bearings or BBs. Doctors also said they removed a host of sharp objects from the victims, including nails that were sticking out of one little girl's body.
Law enforcement sources told CBS News' Milton that a Saudi Arabian man who was being questioned by investigators is not being considered a suspect at this time (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57579893/sources-injured-saudi-man-not-a-suspect-in-boston-attacks/), and it appears that he was a spectator who was injured in the attack.
At the White House, meanwhile, President Barack Obama, who is to travel to Boston Thursday for an interfaith service for the bombing victims, said that the bombings were an act of terrorism but that investigators do not know if they were carried out by an international organization, a domestic group or a "malevolent individual."
He added: "The American people refuse to be terrorized."
Across the U.S., from Washington to Los Angeles, police stepped up security, monitoring landmarks, government buildings, transit hubs and sporting events. Security was especially tight in Boston, with bomb-sniffing dogs checking Amtrak passengers' luggage at South Station and transit police patrolling with rifles.
"They can give me a cavity search right now and I'd be perfectly happy," said Daniel Wood, a video producer from New York City who was waiting for a train.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said there was no evidence the bombings were part of a wider plot. But she said security was stepped up as a precaution.
Similar pressure-cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report (http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/Department_of_Homeland_Security_2010_Warning_on_Pressure_Cookers.pdf) by the FBI and Homeland Security. Also, one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.
"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.

Chaos, then kindness after bombing

(http://www.cbjunkies.com/video/watch/?id=50144955n)Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the bombings, which took place at the world's best-known distance race, held every year on one of Boston's biggest holidays, Patriots' Day.
"We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime, and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice," DesLauriers said earlier in the day.
Gov. Deval Patrick said that contrary to earlier reports, no unexploded bombs were found.
Boston police and firefighter unions announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrests in the bombing.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said investigators also gathered a large number of surveillance tapes from businesses in the area and intend to go through the videos frame by frame.
"This is probably one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday," he said.
At least 17 people were critically injured, police said. At least eight children were being treated at hospitals. In addition to losing limbs, victims suffered broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums.
Dr. Stephen Epstein of the emergency medicine department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said he saw an X-ray of one victim's leg that had "what appears to be small, uniform, round objects throughout it — similar in the appearance to BBs."

(http://www.cbjunkies.com/video/watch/?id=50144951n)Dr. Richard Wolfe, chief of Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, told CBS News Tuesday (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505263_162-57579776/hospital-emergency-chief-on-boston-marathon-bombing-injuries-lower-limb-shrapnel-injuries-prevalent) that the injuries sustained in the bombing have been primarily shrapnel injuries in the lower extremities.
"Some hand injuries, but mainly devastating injuries to limbs," Wolfe said. "We have at least two amputations and a number of very serious wounds that require fairly aggressive care."
Eight-year-old Martin Richard was among the dead, said Rep. Stephen Lynch, a family friend. The boy's mother, Denise, and 6-year-old sister, Jane, were badly injured. His brother and father were also watching the race but were not hurt.
A candle burned on the stoop of the family's single-family home in the city's Dorchester section Tuesday, and the word "Peace" was written in chalk on the front walk.
Neighbor Betty Delorey said Martin loved to climb neighborhood trees and hop the fence outside his home.

(http://www.cbjunkies.com/video/watch/?id=50145001n)Also killed was Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford, Mass., who had gone with her best friend to take a picture of the friend's boyfriend crossing the finish line on Monday afternoon.
William Campbell said his daughter was "very caring, very loving person, and was Daddy's little girl."
A very emotional Patty Campbell told reporters about Krystle: "Everybody who knew her loved her. She had a heart of gold. She was always smiling and friendly. You couldn't ask for a better daughter. This doesn't make any sense."
A graduate student at Boston University is also one of the fatalities in Monday's attack, the school's president, Robert Brown, announced on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/BostonUniversity/posts/10151448625753962), while another student was injured and being treated at Boston Medical Center. "We cannot at present release the names of the victims," said Brown. "I can tell you that the injured student is in stable condition. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family and friends of both victims."
On late Tuesday, the Chinese Consulate confirmed that the deceased is a Chinese citizen. "At the request of her family, the victim's personal information will not be disclosed. Another Chinese citizen is among the injured and is in stable condition now after surgery," said the consulate in a statement.
About 23,000 runners participated in this year's Boston Marathon. Nearly two-thirds of them had crossed the finish line by the time the bombs exploded, but thousands more were still completing the course.
Demi Clark, a runner from North Carolina who said she was the crossing finish line as the first blast went off, told CBSNews.com (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57579725/boston-bombing-witnesses-in-their-own-words/) "blood was everywhere instantly."

(http://www.cbjunkies.com/video/watch/?id=50144949n)The attack may have been timed for maximum bloodshed: The four-hour mark is typically a crowded time near the finish line because of the slow-but-steady recreational runners completing the race and because of all the friends and relatives clustered around to cheer them on.
Davis, the police commissioner, said authorities had received "no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen" at the race. On Tuesday, he said that two security sweeps of the route had been conducted beforehand.

I wish they would catch the person and put his ass in a larger open warehouse. Invite the family members that lost someone or suffered an injury to that warehouse and let them do whatever they felt was do justice to that person. I feel once the person is caught and found guilty, they should walk him straight to the gallows right then and there.

By Pete Williams, Erin McClam and Tracy Connor, NBC News
The FBI released new photos of two "armed and extremely dangerous" suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing early Friday.
The pair — who were armed with explosives and guns — battled authorities in a Boston suburb (http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/19/17817173-one-boston-marathon-suspect-dead-another-still-on-run-officials-say?lite) until cops took one of the men into custody, and the other fled, sources said. Officials later said the the suspect taken into custody died.
The suspect seen wearing the white baseball cap in the photos was still on the run, according to officials.
Earlier, Boston FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers asked for tips, adding: "Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members,"
Advertise (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31066137/media-kit/) | AdChoices (http://g.msn.com/AIPRIV/en-us)

"Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us.
"We consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous," DesLauriers added. "No one should approach them...If you see these men, contact law enforcement."
The FBI is asking the public's help to identify two suspects: one wearing a dark hat, and another wearing a white hat, who were both spotted carrying black backpacks near the scene of the bombing. One was observed setting down a backpack at the site of the second blast. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

The images showed two men in baseball caps and dark jackets who were seen walking together through the crowd at Monday's iconic race. New headshots were released by the FBI at 2 a.m. ET on Friday.
Law enforcement sources tell NBC News that unreleased portions of the surveillance video show the suspect in the white hat working his way out of the crowd, then raising his arm to apparently lift the backpack off his shoulder, but the view is obstructed by others. He sets the backpack down, working his way out of the crowd, then pausing briefly just before the first bomb explodes.
He then calmly begins to work his way away from the second device, sources said. Seconds later, the second bomb explodes, and a terrible scene of carnage is apparent.
Seconds after that explosion, a photograph now in hands of the FBI appears to show the suspect in the white hat moving away amid the smoke rising midway down the block behind him.
Two sources said they are looking for repeat names amid the flood of calls to the investigators’ tip line to give them leads on who the suspects are.

This image, which was released by the FBI early Friday, shows two Boston Marathon bombing suspects together.

The man in the dark cap with a black backpack is being called Suspect No. 1. The other man, Suspect No. 2, is wearing a white cap backward and carrying a lighter-colored backpack.
The public was asked to call a hotline, 1-800-CALL-FBI, with tips or visit the bureau's website, bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov (http://bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov/).
"No bit of information, no matter how small or seemingly inconsequential, is too small for us to see," DesLauriers said. "Each piece moves us forward toward justice."
Following the release of the photos, people had already started calling in names.
Investigators zeroed in on one of the men within the last day or so, he said. By examining photos and videos of the marathon crowd, they were able to identify a second suspect.

These are among the photos of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing released by the FBI.

"They appear to be associated," he said.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick echoed the FBI's call for the public to help. "Pass along to law enforcement any information about the suspects that you may have," he said.
The FBI released no other information about the probe, including the motive for the bombing, which killed three people, including an 8-year-old boy, and wounded 176.
Investigators are casting a wide net for clues. The FBI was canvassing hobby stores in the Boston area to determine whether electrical components in the bombs were bought there, NBC News learned.
Forensic work from the blast zone has helped authorities identify major components of the bombs.
They were housed in metal containers — at least one an everyday kitchen pressure cooker — and studded with metal, including fine nails or brads, to make the devices more lethal. A battery pack typically used on toy cars and a circuit board were also recovered.

The FBI is looking for these two men, identified as suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing.

But the videos are the biggest break in the case yet. They were unveiled hours after President Obama attended an interfaith prayer service to reassure both the injured and the city (http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/18/17810238-you-will-run-again-obama-says-marathon-attack-will-not-shake-bostons-resolve?lite).
“You will run again,” he declared at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, less than a mile from the finish line. “Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act.”
As of Thursday morning, 56 patients were still being treated in hospitals. That was down from 65 on Wednesday.
“In general, people are getting better, and we are happy with their progress,” Dr. Peter Burke, chief of trauma at Boston Medical Center, told reporters early Thursday.
The three people killed in the attack were Lingzi Lu, a Boston University graduate student; 8-year-old Martin Richard of Boston; and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell of Medford, a Boston suburb.
A trauma surgeon said that doctors have pulled fragments as large as 2 inches, including pieces of wood, concrete and plastic, from the bodies of the injured, in addition to metal shrapnel from the bombs.

WATERTOWN (CBS) – A flurry of applause at the scene of a standoff between police and Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev signaled his capture Friday night.
After a nearly two-hour standoff in a Watertown neighborhood, Tsarnaev was taken from the scene by ambulance to a Boston hospital where he was in serious condition.
A Tweet by Boston police minutes later said it best:
“We got him. Thank God we got him,” Mayor Tom Menino told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Dan Rea.

As hundreds of police officers and federal authorities drove away from the scene Friday night, large crowds of residents lined the streets applauding, some waving American flags.
“Overwhelming. Relief,” Watertown resident Josh Smith said. “We can sleep tonight.”
THE STANDOFF
The standoff began just before 7 p.m., minutes after Massachusetts State Police announced that they had completed their door-to-door search in Watertown without locating [URL="http://boston.cbslocal.com/tag/boston-marathon-bombings/"]Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (http://onefundboston.org/).
A homeowner on Franklin Street went into his yard after being inside all day. According to police, he noticed a rip in the tarp that covered his boat and saw blood on the boat. Upon looking inside, he saw a man covered in blood.
The homeowner then called 911.
According to CBS News’ John Miller, three Boston police officers responded to the yard and saw the bloody suspect. Before they could call for backup, the suspect popped up from the boat and opened fire.
Officers returned fire. It is unclear if Tsarnaev was injured in that exchange, or if all of his injuries were sustained in a gunfight early Friday morning in another Watertown neighborhood. (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/19/report-boston-marathon-bombing-suspect-in-custody-second-at-large/)

WBZ-TV’s Jim Armstrong was in the area of Franklin Street when he heard what he described as 15-20 seconds of rapid gunfire. He was forced to take cover, and was quickly moved back to safety by police.
WBZ NewsRadio reported that authorities used thermal imaging from a helicopter to confirm the suspect’s whereabouts. The street where Tsarnaev was arrested, fell just outside the 20 block perimeter established for a door-to-door search. Police said that home was not part of the original search.

Armstrong described a flurry of police activity that erupted moments after police wrapped up a press conference in which they lifted a day-long lockdown in Watertown, Boston and several surrounding communities.
Police were seen carrying small children to safety. Because the lockdown had been lifted, there were people out on the streets when the gunfire started.
Additional loud bangs were heard around 7:50 p.m. – approximately one hour after the first gunshots were heard in the neighborhood.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had been on the run since very early Friday morning, when he and his brother were involved in a gunfight with police near Dexter and Laurel streets in Watertown (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/19/report-boston-marathon-bombing-suspect-in-custody-second-at-large/). Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in that encounter.
Photos of the two men (http://boston.cbslocal.com/photo-galleries/2013/04/18/photos-boston-marathon-bombings-suspects/)were released Thursday evening by the FBI. The photos showed the brothers at the Boston Marathon, carrying backpacks. Those backpacks are believed to have contained the pressure cooker bombs that killed three people and injured more than 170 marathon spectators.
The brothers are also suspected of killing an MIT police officer (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/19/slain-mit-police-officer-identified-as-26-year-old-from-somerville/) as he sat in his vehicle Thursday night.

That's a big 10-4 caveman. It's what's no going on upstairs is the problem. No right minded human can think about doing an act like this against a fellow Americans. I say that because he was a citizen of the USA. We all maybe different by color or ethnics and states we live in, but we all are free Americans, and I'm thankful for that.
