Cobra 19 in a 50 cal can, with a 12v 12ah battery. External speakers connected one to the external hookup, one to the PA hookup. K30 mag mount with 15' cable randomly bunched up inside, soit can be stretched out an placed on a sufficient ground plane, or left on the ammo can if necessary. Placing the can directly on the ground helps a lot if a metal surface isn't available. The hole next to the Mic is for a 1/4" headphone jack. The cigarette lighter plug serves as both an aux power outlet for a phone/ipod/whatever charger, and also serves as the charging port for the internal batts.

Its kinda dumb, but it works and makes a decent camp base station, or a loaner cb to put in vehicles that don't have radios, like when we go off-roading.

Brother that is one fine piece of equipment...I love it...I'm big into portable operations, love camping and have made a carry case out of an old tool box on wheels but that is dynamite!!! Great job!

Not what it was built for.

How about adding a small solar panel to maintain the battery when not in use. Harbor Freight has them on the cheap, I think it a solar powered float charger. I see the possibilities with this in deer camps / camping. I need one for my daughter so see can talk to her friends instead of using mine... :) I don't like sharing.... lol!

I thought about solar, but it would require a 15 watt panel to provide just over a 1 amp charge in full sun. That would take 12 hours to charge from depleted, if the radio was turned off.

I love thw idea of solar, but the little float charger/maintainer panels just wouldnt cut it.

You just need to add the expanded metal to cover your speakers. How's the SWR? Neat project though!

charger to run to a car battery to charge the internal batteries? dumb idea i know but it could work.

Mark II: Half the size, half the weight. 2 foot firestik knock-off antenna, and the speaker hole pattern transferred to the case, and lined up, eliminating the space requirement and weight of extra speakers and a mag mount. Power comes from a pair of 6v 7ah SLA batteries, one in each end of the can. Still have to add the charge port. SWR as of yet unknown.

thats a big 10-4 there chewy. one of these would be pretty cool. i would make it so there is a little swr meter built into it. and maybe some kinda detachable ground plane or a ground plane you can fold up or something of the sort if its needed.

Or try some lipo batteries. They hold their charge much better than lead acid type batts and are much smaller. I use them for rc cars and quad copters. Seems like they would be a good idea for a small app like posted, and caveman I am like you, I want to build one now, time to dig out am old ammo box, or make one from some scrap wood I have. Great idea anickode!! Thanks for posting this. If you can get the swr readindgs half way decent, it will work, you could always try a 102" whip with a spring. Not as compact as yours is, but may work. Keep us posted on it as you have sparked my curiosity sir. God bless.

that is not dum at all. I did the same thing to a Jeep YJ. I put it between the front seats and but a bar of steel under the box to make it simi-perm. unless some one needed it for their use. I would go into the bush and had no problems with others who wanted it more. It was mounted up off floor in case of water got into floor. Fording streams there was no water damage. You did good sir.

That's not a dumb idea. The union truckers that work for Yellow/Roadway, UPS, ABF etc. use portable racks to carry an AM/FM tape deck or CD as well as the CB. They drive a different cab each day until they reach pretty high up the totem pole. That's where the Vice Grip Mount came from. In the 80's you couldn't buy one. I remember a man in San Fernando that was welding the vice grip clamps up for the truckers at Certified Grocers of California drivers (now Unified Grocers). The company said "No drilling holes to mount brackets" etc. But they gave permission to the truck shop welded a bar to a plate and bolted it on the side of the cab that the vice grip would mount to. The antennas were mounted on a cross bar and were only about 7 inches apart. Not too great for SWR, but since the job was "slip seat" there was nothing else you could do. Some men used a tool box or similar. Some made up racks that looked like they raided their kids erector set lol. I see them on ebay about once a year. I like your ammo can approach and want to make one out of a tall can I have to carry in the motor home.

So I know this is an old thread but did anyone other than the OG poster build one? And how does the one that you built anickode work? Still am wanting to do this. Too many projects LOL!! Anyway, if anyone else has made one of these post up some pics please and let us know what was used for batts and such. I would think a stack of some decent lipo batts with large mah, and C ratings, 11.1v ones should hold charge at 12.6-12.8vdc for a good bit. Anyway. Just curious if anyone else have this a shot or did it not work well for anyone????
