Question Opinions Wanted On The Old Uniden HR-2510 Vs The Old President Lincoln

I was recently able to get one of these just about "NOS" with box and all papers, and wanted to know what the pro's and con's of the forum members. I know a lot of you know about the older radio's and was curious as to what you would say about each. I am not saying which one because I want fair opinions on both without saying which one I got. I will say down the road on this thread which I did purchase. Couldn't turn down for the price. Thanks in advance for anything you may have to say about either radio.

the 2510 / lincoln is a great radio, but even if it is like new condition, it will probly need a lot of work to make it work the way it should,, being a 30 yr old radio it may need caps, there was also a glue that the factory used to hold some of the wiring to the board and after some time this glue gets very corrosive and likes to eat away the traces on the board, also all the ones I have had always had a slight distorded audio come through the speaker when transmitting(more noticeable with an external speaker, there is a mod to fix this with a diode install that shuts down the audio chip on transmit, I have done this on all the ones I had)

unless you can do the work yourself, I think you would be money ahead to just get one of the newer export radio's

Had both of the radios posted and wish I still had them, that was almost 15 years ago too. And they were an older radio back then. But if done up right, they were a heck of a radio. Doc of New York will make those radios work well, but like wi544 posted, they are an old radio and man times have changed. Look at the new maxlog 8900, double sided SMT board. Small as can be and still capable of producing 40 watts. Technology is making some leaps And soo enough there will be some GOOD radios back out. I personally have been very happy with my optima mk3. It's a great no frills radio that just works! If you are looking to restore the radio you purchased check out the doc of New York, his speciality is the 2510 and similar. I have heard many good things about his work and that he truly knows what he is doing, also there are a couple of members here that could do the work as well, that is if you aren't planning on doing it yourself. Tallman is a great tech and can help you out as well. He knows his stuff as well!! Anyway, good luck with the radio whatever you decide! God bless

Thanks for all the advice and just to let you guys know, plan on total restoration of cleaning board and replacing all caps by a specialist of the Lincoln/2510 radio. Need to do a lot of mods as well as all you said replacing the wiring and all the caps and a lot of resistors as well as regulators and finals also. Thanks again.

If it is NOS meaning it has never been used, I would hook it up and run it through a "Burn in" process. Just apply the regulated power hook to a dummy load and let it run for 24 hours continuous receive. After that is done sit down with it still connected to the dummy load transmit for 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off. Continue for 10 minutes. Observe power and modulation, if the levels start to drop you might have a problem. If it passes I would just get the "Chip Switch" mod and be done with it. My HR-2510 was bought from an Estate sale used for years till the owner ended up in a rest home for 10 years till he passed. I tested it and worked fine and still does.

I have taken brand new Galaxy DX979's and just had it powered up for 24 hours and they failed. No elevated temperatures or cold cycling. Just sitting on the bench powered up and attached to a dummy load. Tested the transmit at the start of the test it worked then but after the burn in it was mute as well as deaf.
