Can I run a 10.8 volt radio on 12 volts?

I have an old hand held radio that the battery is shot, someone has been using a remote power supply to run it as there are 2 wires coming out of it, the instructions say that the radio can be used on no more than 12 volts or it will vold the warranty.

I was thinking about using the cigarette liter in the car to power it but I have seen upto 14.5 volts coming out of there.

Would this burn the radio out?

If you have some technical skills you could build your own regulated power cord you could plug in to the lighter socket. It would take a small amount of parts and a little solder. Depending how much current it draws if it is less than one ampere easy to build and it could be adjustable.(LM-317)

at walmart and/or radio radioshack they used to sell a cigerette lighter plug that had a variable
voltage switch on it and u set it to the voltage you needed.it went up by 2-3 volts at a time
so ya sometimes had to use 1 less volt but no biggie.plus they had alot of rca jacks to plug into
ya radio on other end these are really neat
