So I know I'm putting out with my setup but I'm not receiving well enough to hear anyone else even at my job. Where there is constant cb radio communication.

I can take a picture of the setup tomorrow. I have an external ground on it have checked the coax to see if it's that and if I turn the calibration up to normal I get a set of around 6+. It's the uniden Barclay 980ssb... should I just get an external swr meter and try tuning it that way?

If your swr reading is 6:1 then you have issues. Don't let the radio for very long or you'll blow it up with that bad of a vswr reading. And yes an external meter is a good idea. Radio shack swr/watt meters work well for the money. But for now ohm your coax out and make sure it's good. Also check the mount for good contact to mounting surface and make sure there is no paint under the mount. If you have another radio that is a junker radio per say I would use it and save your 980 from getting damaged.

I think your reading swr wrong....In my 40 years of dealing with CB Radios, I can't say I have ever seen a SWR reading of 6+...Most SWR Meters only go to 3 to start with.
This is the built in swr meter on the radio

Something isn't right that is for sure. I didn't know the 980 swr meter would go that high LOL!
Make sure you are going to the calibration and setting it to the line, then push the swr/cal/rf button again to show swr. Naldo keep mic gain all the way down to 1. And don't talk or modulate. Use AM mode as well. Hope this helps. I'd get an external meter. At least a radio shack meter. Better than the truck stop ones and good for mobiles as well. Order online or look round for a radio shack. Good luck and hope you get it fixed
What did you figure out on this?
