    Checking SWR

I'm trying to check my SWR and tune my antenna but the SWR is high. 3+ on the meter. Will checking the SWR hurt my radio? I'm just holding the transmit button down for less than a second. Enough to get the reading.

Make sure your mic gain is all the way down.
Also make sure you are in a clear area with at least 50-100ft of area that has no other obstructions including people.
Make sure your meter is connected properly.
Also make sure your coax doesn't have a bad connector or pinch in it. Use a meter to test the coax for any short between the center pin and outer part of connector as well. Make sure all doors, hood, trunk, and Windows are closed. And that no one else is just standing around the vehicle either. Hope this helps. Most of it you probably already know, but never hurts to go over things again. JMHO. Have a good day.
