Back scatter is when an RF wave propagates as far as its energy can take it and the solar energy takes over and spreads it further, some times back towards the transmitter or into an area that is not accessable by skip, usually under 600 miles. The Antenna Specialist M-400 Starduster is an excellent skip antenna as it has a high take off angle for the RF wave.
