    Lightbulb Bulldog's Custom Heat Shield

One disadvange I have with my mobile is the location where it is mounted. Being right on the dashboard it is great to see and operate! When parked it is now exposed to direct sunlight which will cause the unit to heat up. With temperatures say ranging from 90-125 degrees in the interior of your vehicle this may shorten the life of your rig. We all know heat kills! Heck temps in your vehicle can reach temps up to 150 degrees or more. So it is always good to practice some common sense. Have tinted windows, park in the shade, open the windows as much as you can and never operate a hot radio! Now we have a few products that can be used like a full sized windshield shade. A full windshield shade shade which will block a lot of the sun rays and keep the interiors temps down a bit. Having the windows open enough will help and bleed off heat pressure. Prevents the pressure cooker effect! The downside to a full windshield shade it is cumbersome. They all are different and may take sometime to find that match. When in use it may hide a thief in progress! In my case I chose to make custom heat shield out of the very same windshield shade material out from a spare UPS box in which one of my radios came in. With the use of some good double side wide tape and glue I got a useful custom heat shield. I used it during the Summer of 2011 and makes a real difference. My next post will reveal the results from testing, Bulldog.

    Exclamation Heat Shield Testing!

Testing happened on July 16, 2011 in my driveway. I have a Radio Shack 63-1090 Weather Forecaster that is radio controlled on 433 MHz. Took two sensors out of the house for this test. All windows were down and parked in direct sunlight for this test! Imagine the windows all the way up, the heat would be lots more. Heck this is only in Maine. With the extreme weather experiences now on the rise in 2012, extra measures must be taken to insure your equipment stays cooler. Do not operate a hot rig! Let the inside and unit cool down first, Bulldog.

Sensor 2 is located inside the heat shield!
    - Outside temperature in the shade at that time 90 degrees +/-
    - Temperature inside the cover 99 degrees +/-
    A 9 degree difference!

Sensor 3 is located on the dash neat to the radio!
    - Outside temperature in the shade at that time 91 degrees +/-
    - Temperature on the dash next to the radio 110 +/-
    A 19 degree difference!

Air temperature is different than surface temperatures, so I imagine the heat shield would prevent the metal covers from promoting more heat, Bulldog!

Neat idea and I used to just put a towel on mine in my truck, until I mounted it in the dash with a custom made AM/FM radio and my 959, designed and built by me for my '80 F100, which now resides in my '81 F150.
