Describe the problem. It may not be shorted out. What happened? What have you done inside the radio? Cap/resistor mod?

Never been inside it. I hooked it up via 12 volt adapter for a cigarette lighter in my truck and it quit and my 12 volt had a strange smell. My gramps said it might be a bad transformer inside it. When I used my other 12 volt adapter it started smoking (the 12 volt adapter did)

The cigarette lighter adapter was smoking? Was the radio smoking also?

I don't think so. I think it was just the 12 volt adapter.

I bet the radio isn't smoked. Try cutting out the fuse and putting in a new adapter with either a 5 or 6a fuse. See if radio comes back. You can test it now by eliminating the fuse temporarily also

I don't think it was a fuse...usually fuses are encased in glass and if they are the newer plastic plug case then you might get a sniff of something but definately not from the glass fuses...I have done and see others do this before...possibly did the wires attached to the 12 volt cig lighter get swapped around? Reversed polarity will burn out the protecting diode inline to the power wire on the circuit board...super easy fix just need a standard volt meter with a diode checker and locate the small diode next to where the power wire (red) enters the case and attached to the circuit board...connect the meter to the diode and listen for the tone...no tone swap leads on the diode to ensure you are testing the correct legs of the diode and if still no tone from the meter...diode is dead...radiocrack has them for 8 cents.
