Had not seen ICOM till above link $660 to us in oz ?? Bit harsh hu...
Go find a 2510 in good condition, send it to Doc in NY. Have him put in the chip switch and "do his thing" to the radio. Then you'll have an amazing 10/11m rig...which by the way will retain its resale value.
All the above mentioned items will came in way under your $500 mark.
Definitely agree an HR-2510 is way to go if can find one, if can't would order from United Kingdom the New President Grant 2 and have a brand new radio that is awesome. Some also like those CRE-8900 or the new Yeti-Com Radio's also but I would rather have that new President Grant 2.

Or even a HR2600. I have the HR2510 and you can't beat it on ssb. Rock steady all day long.
All answers are opinions and may, or may not be technically correct.

If I take the test and get my 10 meter ticket, this is the radio I want.

Those 2510's were some talking ass radios Gordon. Had a tech around my area that knew how to work on them as well, and man they are a mean radio when done properly, my friends dad had one that he would talk around the world with barefoot, with a big stick up 70ft. This is from Florida. Some would say they are a "cheater" radio if you know what I mean. They are getting harder to find, although I have ran across them at ham fest's before.
