Does anyone have an opinion about Francis antennas? My husband had one years ago that he loved and he keeps saying we should get another one. I've never had one, so I thought I'd look for some outside opinions.

They are good, but not very tree friendly. Lol. They are made from fiberglass. They were one of the best back in the day, but my honest opinion is that there are far better antennas on the market today. If your looking for an inexpensive antenna, a 5' firestik is great! Its only rated for 1000 watts, but i pumped 2500 into mine without it melting and you can get a new one on ebay for about $18, maybe less.

SweetPea, I asked my dad and several other people about the Francis and they all gave it a thumbs up. They are rather long, but awe-some in performance. Put a heavy duty coil spring and your all set. My uncle still has his on his truck and swears by it.
being a constant load antenna instead of top, base, or mid load, these work great in a variety of different applications. Power handling due to design however, isn't anything to write home about. I've used two of them before on a rig, then again just recently as a dipole type antenna for base use. Of course I wouldn't run anything larger than a barefoot radio into them.
Working my 1 watt walkie talkie and coax dipole in my basement....
