Mirage MX36HP and the MX86HP have the same case as a Cobra 29 Classic or the Chrome...I have a 36HP which is just the AM version and it's a OK radio. Dual Final does around 40w's after tuned...Comes stock with a Ranger SRA 198 noise cancelling Mic, so there's no reason to have to go out and buy a better Mic than what comes with the radio...The SRA 198's are not "junk" stock Mic's like come with most radios...
The 86HP is just like the 36HP, only difference being it has SSB.
The Uniden BC980 is suppose to be a real good SSB radio, but has SMT board so there's not much that can be done as for as Mod's, unless you know a real good tech that knows what he's doing with those boards.
Between those 3 radios, if I was looking for a radio to use mostly on SSB, I would go with the Uniden...IF I were looking for a radio that can be mod'ed easily on AM, I would go with the 959...I've seen some 959's that get tricked out every way you can think of...But I have also herd they tend to drift on SSB.
If I had limited space, but want a radio with a little more punch out of the box, and SSB, plus all the extra channels of a Export, then I would get the 86Hp...
Just depends on what your planning on talking most on...AM or SSB...Plus how much your willing to spend.
The Uniden would be the cheapest, followed by the 959, then the 86HP which sells over $200+.
