For those of you who may be using a coil antenna now or have in the past. From your experiences, which are the best ones? If you were going to use one, which would you buy?

i'm a fan of the predator 10k antennas , love mine .
if your gonna use it for your base antenna idea loose the coil and go with a 108 inch whip ..... with the ground plane added and a coax choke .

here's a link to explain coax chokes

they help prevent common mode currents from coming down the coax . CMC's can cause bleeding into nearby electronics (tv , computer . etc. )
there is no GP kit there for it . you can make one out of speaker wire and PVC pipe from lowes/homedepot etc. .
here's one i made , used speaker wire for the vertical ... just taped it to the side of a piece of pvc sticking up above the GP .

Get a Antron 99 ...just a straight up piece of fiberglass and you don,t need to have radials..
and will work way better than trying to use a mobile antenna..
Can buy them almost every were..
An A99 will exceed my height limit. I have a max of 10' and truly, less - 8' or 9', would be much better.

With respect to ground plane, after speaking with an old friend who is back in Illinois, I get the impression that I could mount my choice of mobile antenna on a large flat piece of sheet metal with a medium size tripod mount. In doing so, the sheet metal would become the ground plane.
I was planning on mounting the antenna on the roof/top of my aluminum patio cover. I could easily lay a large 3' X 6' or maybe 4' X4' piece of sheet metal on he roof with the antenna mounted to it. Based on your knowledge, would that work?

you can certainly try that , but it's gonna be a very very small ground plane for a quarter wave . they typically work better with 3 or 4 full 1/4 wavelength (9 ft on the CB band) ground elements . since your patio cover is aluminum id mount the vertical in the middle and use the aluminum cover as a ground element since it's (i'm assuming) much much larger than a 3x6 or 4x4 sheet of sheet metal . be sure to let us know your results with the tripod and sheet metal .
